Check whether it needs a semi at all
A great deal of freight is too big for a parcel carrier and nowhere near a 53 foot trailer. A cargo van, box truck or straight truck fills exactly that gap, often faster and for less.

Give cube and weight, not just pallet count
These vehicles run out of space before they run out of weight. Dimensions matter more here than on a semi, so give the footprint and the height of what is moving.

Say what is at each end
Dock, ground level, stairs, or inside delivery. A box truck with a liftgate can serve a site with no dock at all, but only if the carrier knows to send one.

When is a box truck cheaper than an LTL carrier?
Usually when the freight is more than a few pallets, fragile, or time-sensitive. LTL moves your shipment through terminals and handles it repeatedly; a dedicated box truck picks up and delivers directly, which means less handling and a schedule you control.
Do I need a liftgate?
You need one if there is no dock and no forklift at either end, and the freight is too heavy to hand down. It is far cheaper to request it in the posting than to discover at the curb that the shipment cannot come off the truck.
Does the driver need a CDL for this?
Not below 26,001 pounds gross vehicle weight rating, which covers most cargo vans and many box trucks. That threshold is why smaller equipment is often available sooner and at a lower rate than a comparable CDL truck.
